I single-handedly brought down Comcast in Boston

11/29/2010

OK, I found out Sunday night that our Comcast was down in Boston and parts of the East Coast, causing all kinds of problems at the office...

Although I cannot prove it, I think I "jinxed" Comcast by sending out this email Friday of last week to everyone in the office, congratulating our successful cutover to Comcast from our former T1 line:

Subject:Pulling the plug on T1 line is official
Thanks to Jason for working through the issues to getting the new Comcast office internet installed.

We now have 10 times the speed of our old T1 line at 1/3 the cost, not a bad deal!

The interesting thing was that I used Twitter and searched for Comcast and got WAY more information than on the Comcast website. In minutes, I knew from various "tweets" about the size of the outage, that the problem was their DNS servers, and some workarounds to fix the problem by switching my Lotus Notes servers DNS to OpenDNS or to Google DNS, which I did.

To me, Twitter is a great real-time news source, sort of a public gestalt.
